I love music! I am a practicing turntablist and classically-trained instrumentalist who's written books and articles, conducted in-depth research projects, and lectured extensively about musical culture.
Since my early days DJing at KUSF and working at Bay Area record stores Open Mind and Amoeba, I've been holding down residencies with an ear for boogie, international funk, hip-hop, psychedelic jazz, and more. Currently in residence at Portland's Wayback (Future Funk) and Dig a Pony (Happiness Hour).
I've written for the SF Bay Guardian, SPIN, SF Weekly, East Bay Express, and a host of skate mags and print publications. My books and articles have been influential in conversatiopns about Southern Hip-Hop, Global Pop, Feminist production, and more.
I have hundreds of hours of field recordings from the Mississippi bluesm, to old-time banjo, to Sufi ritual in Senegal. I'm hoping to archive these in upcoming years.
