Women Who Rock

This course draws from this rich contributions of global women through- out the history of popular music: Blues women, girl groups, backup singers, honky-tonk queens. lady rappers, riot girrrrls, religious praise singers, and underground electronic DJs. In their work, we locate a series of critical practices by which women find ways to empower them- selves ad their communities through music. We ask: How do women “do politics” through music? What can music say for women that words can- not? What are some of the problems of representation of the feminine in pop that women work to contest, resist, and unravel? How can we sharpen our own critical practices to understand and amplify women’s voices throughout the history of popular music? Classic texts on women and popular culture, hidden musical practitioners, and alternative popular music histories come to bear.
